About
Michelle (Barsalou) Bumpus offers private piano and theory lessons to all ages and levels with emphasis on goal setting and performance. She is a friendly, cheerful, well organized teacher who encourages all her students to participate in the South Fraser Music Festival held annually. Students are expected to work towards completing RCM examinations when appropriate. Exceptions are made for very early beginners. Recitals are held once or twice a year and are preceded by performance classes where attendance is mandatory.
Michelle began teaching piano part-time in 1994 in South Surrey while studying piano with Kevin Thompson and theory with Darlene Brigidear in White Rock, BC. She became an Auxiliary member of the South Fraser Branch that same year. Michelle continued to take lessons and teach while completing a Bachelor's degree in Conservation Biology at UBC. She then worked in her field for a short time and completed her ARCT Performers Diploma in 2001 when she began teaching piano full-time. She joined the South Fraser Branch and has been active on the Festival & Executive Committees. She took Teacher Training courses at the Victoria Conservatory from 2004 – 2006 and received her AVCM Teaching Diploma. Here, Michelle studied with Winifred Scott Wood, Dr. Robin Wood, Robert Holliston, David Clenman, and Susan De Burgh to name a few.
Michelle is an RCM Certified Teacher and currently teaches from her home studio in the Panorama area of Surrey. She and her husband, Scott, have two daughters aged 10 and 12. They like to go on family outdoor adventures during their free-time together.
