Mr. Liu was trained at the Trinity College of Music, London. England in the late 70’s. He obtained his Fellowship and Graduate Diploma with Honors. After his graduation, Mr. Liu furthered his studies with celebrated flautists such as the principal flautist of the National Philharmonic Orchestra, Edward Beckett; principal flautist of the Convent Garden Orchestra, Harold Clark; and principal flautist of the BBC Concert Orchestra, William Bartlett. Mr. Liu returned to Hong Kong in the early 80s, where he then worked as a freelance musician. He frequently appeared as a soloist with orchestras and on television.

Mr. Liu moved to Vancouver in the 1990’s. He obtained his bachelor's degree in Music Education at UBC. Since then, he has been hired as an elementary school music teacher in British Columbia for more than 27 years. In early year 2000s, Mr. Liu furthered his studies at SFU. He was awarded an Advance Diploma in Education specializing in Performing Art. At present, Mr. Liu had been a full-time music director in two Surrey elementary schools until he retired in December 2021.

While Mr. Liu was working as a public-school music teacher, he was invited to join the BCCM as a faculty member in 1998. He has been teaching there for more than 20 years and was appointed as the Wind Department head teacher since 2010. His students have won numerous awards, including two RCM level 8 Flute Silver Medals; two Honor Awards for solo flutists in the 1998 Music Canada Festival hosted in Vancouver; a finalist representing BC in the 2002 National Music Scholarship for music students under the age of 18 and a champion in Kiwanis Festival level 10 flute competition in 2021.

Mr. Liu has also inspired students to further their musical careers. One of his students received a music scholarship to enter University of Western Ontario in 2003, another was accepted into the Capilano College Music faculty in 2014. Furthermore in 2021, he had two students accepted by U of Toronto and UBC Music Faculty.
